About The Artist
Born 1965 at Delhi, Bhagat Singh initially did a trade certificate course and worked as a technician and then as a bill board painter before taking up formal studies in art first for his Bachelor’s and then Master’s Degrees both in Painting that he passed from the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi. A brief stint as an art teacher in a school followed by short courses in cultural studies at the Centre for Cultural Resources & Training and then at the National Museum, all in Delhi, helped to hone his skills and add to his expertise in the arts . The exuberant colourful imagery in Bhagat Singh’s canvases presents a panoramic view of nature in its myriad forms. Though he grew up in a crowded middle class area of the city, Bhagat is a committed landscape artist. His work comes submerged in flora and fauna of changing seasons, snarling creepers, fruiting trees and flowering patterns in shaded greens or reds or blues and yellows. His compositions and detailed rendering of the images suggest an influence of the miniature tradition. The artist paints in oil on canvas and watercolours and pen & ink drawings on paper- that reflect his craftsmanship in line drawing, his command over the palette and his understanding of plant life. Bhagat’s work has been shown in some half a dozen solo exhibitions, including one at London, besides about 70 group shows, workshops and other art events. Winner of a merit certificate at All India Art Exhibition Rendezvous in Chandigarh, an award from AIFACS and the Best Entry award thrice at various all India art exhibitions, his work is held in several public institutions including the Sahitya Kala Parisad, AIFACS and the LKA as well as private collections in India and abroad.
