About The Artist

Born 1966 in Kerala, Binoy Varghese completed his Diploma in Fine Arts from R.L.V. College of Fine Arts, Thripunithura, following which he worked at Cholamandal in Chennai, Kanodia Centre in Ahmedabad and then at the Banff Centre for Arts in Canada before settling in Delhi. Binoy one of the shooting stars in contemporary Indian art, is known for his skills in portraiture and his photo-realistic style and subject matter. The colourful imagery on paper and canvas is picked up from his myriad experiences and the tacit world of Indian society today. He works mostly in larger format, and focuses on issues of displacement capturing posing protagonists, often women and children, in their new found domains against a background of made-up environment of thick foliage interspersed with bright flowers ready to engulf and overpower. Their social-political-gender realities are highlighted by the dress they wear or the sharpness or softness of the background and foliage in the work. Winner of several awards including the Artist of the Month, Binoy’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in India and abroad, including The Other Gallery, Canada. Binoy lives in Ghaziabad and works out of his studio in the city.
