To read only nostalgia into Vijay Sharma’s art work would be mistaking his subtle yet ever-present irony. His royal portraiture has all elegance, and grandeur of Royalty the constant presence of the self-portrait dressed as an everyday urban, jeans-clad citizen brins in that strong sense of satire that he intends for his work. The disappearing past and feudal history that gives way to a cosmopolitan uniformity ‘a global identity’, is where the sharp edge of his visually seductive imagery lies. The larger-than-life portraits of the isolated and expressionless royal figures are closely observed by the artist miniature figures. The detailed gold maroon robes, the play of light and shadows, the abundance of life, the elegance of the interiors, all add up to the depth of perspective in Vijay’s intricate works. The artist does leaves it open to the audience to question and bring about a balance between the miniatures view every object closely to assess and reflect on what does not necessarily serve us anymore or truly make us content.
