THE DEPTH OF ESSENCE:
Ganesh Gohain traverses multiple realities through his work, exploring the ephemeral and permeable nature of time. The exhibition at Bikaner House in October 2024 will focus on Ganesh’s engagement with time, light, and the intangible realms that lie beyond our immediate perception.
“The way I create my work becomes a psychological gesture, engaging viewers with various façades that reveal sculptural dimensions,” Ganesh explains. His art is interactive; its perception shifts with the viewer’s movement, offering new visual dimensions from different angles. Born in 1967, Ganesh graduated from the Government College of Art and Crafts in Guwahati, Assam, and later specialized at MS University, Baroda. His international recognition includes invitations as an Artist in Residence at the Glasgow School of Art and the prestigious Charles Wallace Fellowship Award. Ganesh’s artistic practice is an ongoing exploration of time through drawing, painting, sculpture, installations, photography, and photographic performances. “Light plays a crucial role in my work—not merely as decoration, but as a reflection of my experiences and journey,” he states. His creations are deeply rooted in his immediate surroundings, reflecting social, political, and cultural themes, as well as the nuances of daily life. “I may be far from my native land, but I have spent half my life in Baroda. While my presence may not be permanent, my experiences linger in every molecule of the air,” Ganesh reflects. He describes his current environment as his ‘Gurukul,’ a sacred space he calls ‘Yashoda,’ where he believes his works transcend the limitations of verbal description.
