Fibre of our Lives

Curator's Note

It is believed that textiles could have been a form of language before the advent of writing and philosophers like Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes and Julia Kristeva ad even explored the metaphor of text as a woven fabric. The word textile has its  rigin from the Latin verb texere means ‘to weave’. Textiles are an integral part of our life; we rely on them for various purpose. The material, quality and process impart metaphors relating to our society and hold symbolic affinity with significant life processes. Fibre of our Lives brings together a range of artists who have worked with textile as a medium to explore its various connotations and facades. It brings in different perspective of usage of fabric or thread to demonstrate the delicacy as well as the vitality of the medium. Textiles are also known to have their association with the skin and to the sense of touch, a sense which is actively encountered through the making of textiles by hand. Customarily, a cloth would have traversed through many hands, from the maker to the wearer highlighting the human connection. Another aspect of fabric is its ability to reveal and conceal. Cloths and threads may also equate to the intricate renderings of the vulnerability of the ties that bind communities, relationships, and bodies together. Apart from community building and social stimulations, the technique of weaving the wrap and weft can be looked like a way of connecting the moments of an individual’s daily life. Interpreting the metaphorical perspective of textile, the thread can correspond to time and the cloth as community. The process of weaving also helps us to understand the working of the universe, the world and how the flora and fauna are woven into it. The exhibition offers an insight into the versatility of contemporary art practice inspired by textiles, weaving and embroidery techniques, or interpreting the aesthetics of fabric and its possibilities as a medium and metaphor.
