About The Artist
Born 1954 in Delhi, Arpana Caur did her schooling and then Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in literature from the city while she continued to refine her skills in drawing and painting as a self learner. Arpana’s finely executed imagery with petite female figuration immersed in folk forms and legends are marked for their deeply spiritual and somewhat autobiographical undertones. The influence of an environment rich in art, music and literature, that she has grown up with resonates in her art as does Punjabi folk narrative, Pahari miniature tradition and Indian folk-art motifs that make recurring appearances in her painterly work. Her personal experiences, both local and global, have been a central theme in much of her sensitively rendered work. Its poetic quality turns even the bold colours into subtle palette in her balanced compositions. Besides painting, Arpana has also worked in drawing, illustrations, printmaking and executing murals and commissions that adorn public spaces and museums in Delhi, Bangalore as well as at Hamburg and Hiroshima. Winner of several awards including the VI Triennale India Gold Medal, Arpana is a Founding Trustee of the Academy of Fine Arts and Literature, set up jointly with her mother a well known writer Ajeet Cour. An avid collector, she has funded and set up a seminal collection of miniature and folk art as a museum at the centre. She regularly takes up initiatives in support of the underprivileged. Her work has been the subject of over a dozen thesis and films and it has featured in numerous solo and group shows all over India and in many galleries around the globe including London, Stockholm, New York, Japan, and Munich and at Copenhagen National Museum. It can be seen in collections and museums of Modern Art at Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal and Chandigarh in India and abroad at Dusseldorf, Singapore, Bradford, Stockholm, Hiroshima, Smithsonian Washington and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Arpana Caur lives and works in Delhi.
