About The Artist

Evoking the flourish of the street painter, images of the lotus with the curling tendrils play themselves in painted steel inlarge dramatic sizes. The cryptic written word found often on the rear of public vehicles has communicated directions,slogans and sometimes nothing. The fonts were developed in an indigenous flavour, combining popular culture, streetgraffiti and a homegrown language. Highly decorative, these fonts evolved from a desire to adorn. The vehicles became afamily member of the owners and were sometimes named after loved ones. Like buying jewellery for a wife or daughter, the vehicle owners who spent a large amount of time with their vehicles started decorating them and a new idiom developed around these replica uhren vehicles creating a new vocabulary in the south Asian public transport surface. It came to be recognized as an art form. Davis explores these forms giving them drama with the scale in his latest exhibition. He engages with the decorative language allowing the scale and contex to transform them. The gaze of the viewer then adds to this, moving them from popular culture to art. Alex Davis is an artist and designer living and working in New Delhi. He has had various solo shows of his works in New Delhi, Chennai, Paris, Milan & Verona.
