About The Artist
As an artist working majorly with clay, sometimes blurring the lines between functional and sculptural, I have been engaged with developing multiple ideas while pushing the technology behind them as a language in itself. As a result, working simultaneously with these multiple ideas over several years, I have employed a vast and diverse array of peculiar processes and materials in my practice each pushing its own limits. As a strategy a lot of my work remain open ended with possibilities of spontaneous changes, expansion and has more then one version at times. As a ceramicist I have a wider area of practice that balances my inner equilibrium. Developing wood fired studio pottery satisfies my need for tranquility and rhythm, which sometimes extends by working on sculptural installations that fulfills the desire for deeper internal reflection and pure poetry. Once I was participating in a potter’s market in Auroville, a community established on the very idea of unity through diversity by the Mother and her disciples from Puducherry half a century ago. A gentleman dressed in neat fashionable attire came to my display area asking me where I was from and how did I end up working in clay etc. After learning that I was from Gujarat, he started talking to me in my native language. After few more questions, he asked me “Tame Keva?” (What caste do you belong to?) This question, if you are an Indian talking to another Indian, will come up at some point during the conversation 90% of the time. Every time this question comes up, I remember what Dr.Ambedkar once said …we are Indians firstly and lastly…so I have devised a simple acronym after some thinking for an appropriate answer and I said to the curious gentleman “IM2C2E”.(I am too complicated to explain)…a diverse gestural and tactile quality I seek during long wood
firings I do twice a year.
