As a landscape designer I often get asked to suggest plants and garden designs which would require little or no maintenance. This is like saying - “I would love to have a garden, but I neither have time, nor can I spare effff ort to tend to it.” This then is the defifi nition of postmodern love, represented here by an all-white Cacti Zen Garden that comes closest to this idea of thriving on neglect. It is a comment on where we are headed, and if we should pause, take a deep breath and reflfl ect on what love really means. My grandfather used to water the plants himself, prune, add compost, graft, spray insecticide, change the pots. He tended to his garden with time and love. The plants responded back in equal measure, now that I think back on this. He only had a terrace for his garden, but it was steeped with his attention and his deepest love. My father too has luxuriant and beautiful garden. He loves it, he says. But he only shouts at and scolds the gardener. Does the garden love my father back? Does the garden know he exists? Does it care?
