About The Artist
Born in Calcutta 1958, Sanjay Bhattacharyya received his Diploma in Art from the Government College of Art & Craft. He began his career in the advertising industry as a designer and soon moved to being a freelance full time painter. A distinguished water-colorist and an exponent of realism in contemporary Indian art Sanjay’s stylistic oeuvre ranges from portraiture to cityscapes that include some deep haunting images of Calcutta, his native city. Some of the most distinctive images of this series include classic renditions of the city’s narrow alleyways, fading grandeur of old palaces, silent pride of its men and women, pain and sufferings of its rickshaw-wallahs. From smaller water colours he has moved to experiment with larger oil canvases and his subject matter has shifted its focus from cities and architectural features to whimsical landscapes of Rajasthan to wide scope portraits and imagery of the Nehru-Gandhi family and more recently tributes to European masters, Salvador Dali and Rembrandt and now Santhal tribals of the East. His canvases often put a spotlight on small details in a scene, zooming in at times to bring forth a hidden meaning or to present a disconcerting perspective.
