About The Artist
I am deeply inspired by the Spectacular and peculiar landscapes of Gujarat. The memories of the infinite looking paddy fields, deserts, farms and Salty pans, I wandered as a child, revisits me through my works. The modulations and variations of the different terrains of Gujarat gettransformed as abstract landscapes in my works. My landscapes are bereft of human existence and I try to bring this solitude and silence in these landscapes. Having extensively studied animals like sheep, cows and other animals which are part of the rural landscapes, these animals occasionally visit my silent landscapes once in a while as metaphors of being. Mark making and scratching are major elements of my process. I initiate my works with several coats of layering which allows me to spend more time creating my works. The canvas or the working surface is treated like earth, where I bring the memories of the landscapes I got inspired of. Also metaphorically the process of scratching represents the violence done on the earth for material exploiting. The process of these markings and scratching is long and I have to patiently work on the surface months together to complete by applying and scratching out many layers. This process transforms the realistic landscapes into terrains of memories painstakingly remembered. I try to achieve a fusion of the abstract and tactile through my work. The forms are abstract or abstracted but the process and the medium are so physical. One can even say that the tactile process of marking, scratching removing and applying on the surface creates the abstraction in my works. My recent works on Folds attempts to read nature and society in a sense of prolonged continuity. I have been drawn towards an abstraction that is rooted in the geography of different places. The complex undulations and folds of different lands, clothes have become patterns and forms in my works. Without breaks of territories, it attempts to build a narrative through abstraction. The physical boundaries of the picture canvas though break as individual pieces the series of works continue to take forward this flow through the different terrains of abstracted landscapes. Put together these fragments of flows create a sense of continuity. I attempt to translate the vastness and openness of nature into the tactile process of painting.
