This was, arguably, the least humiliating of the 20 restrictions imposed on the Hindus of Kashmir from the 14th century onwards. You will not resist conversion to Islam was another (Zakhirat ul-Muluk by Mir Syed Ali Hamdani). Defiance would result in loss of all the possessions, life included. Most of us converted. Those who didn’t, suffered relentless cycles of genocide, generation after successive generations. This is a trauma that is singed in the very psyche of the survivors. It is the kind of memory that the nightmares are made of”.
