Fresh Off The Wheel Between The Functional & Aesthetic
It has been a constant endeavor to elevate the status of works in clay from a traditional decorative item to a contemporary art form, combining artistic expression, technical mastery, and a forward-thinking approach to art and design. While some ceramics are considered fine art, such as pottery or sculpture, most are considered to be decorative, industrial or applied art objects. Fresh off the Wheel attempts to capture this complex relationship between the functional object and its artistic expression.
Curator's Note
<p style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: Arial, "sans-serif"; font-size: 18.6667px;">Function, form and fine-art in ceramics as a way of understanding the creators’ approach their clay works. On a fundamental level, ceramics are everyday utilitarian objects that have a function to perform – cups, tiles, plates, bowls or amphorae of various kinds. For many makers, exploring a vessel’s functionality or fitness for purpose is a sufficient end goal and one that drives them in their clay work. However, ceramics may be an artistic medium, a vehicle for communication of their thoughts and ideas to a broader audience—many artists who have chosen clay as their medium.</span></p>
