LIFE IS BETTER IN BLACK AND WHITE- II

Curator's Note

In 2021, we curated Life is Better in Black and White, an exhibition that received overwhelming appreciation. Building on that success, we now present its second chapter: Life is Better in Black and White II an exhibition that delves deeper into the timeless allure and quiet power of monochrome.

Here, artists reflect on the subtle interplay of presence and absence, clarity and ambiguity, form and void, all expressed through the evocative language of black and white. By stripping away the distraction of colour, we aim to reveal the raw essence of texture, light, contrast, and emotion.

Across cultures and histories, black and white occupy a unique position, straddling the boundary between colour and non-colour. They carry distinct symbolic weight, serving as powerful metaphors for identity, duality, and the tension between visibility and invisibility.

Black is visually dense and commanding, suggesting strength, mystery, and finality. White, by contrast, is active and illuminating it reveals, purifies, and evokes both beginnings and endings. Psychologically, black-and-white thinking often implies absolutism, ignoring nuance. Yet in art, this stark contrast can feel more honest, imposing boundaries, sharpening focus, and intensifying meaning. The dance of light and dark lies at the heart of visual composition. White embodies pure light; black, its absence. Together, they create space for artists to explore the philosophical, poetic, and spiritual dimensions of their work.

So let us be distracted from colour and drawn instead into a deeper engagement with material, surface, shadow, and form. With Life is Better in Black and White II, we invite you to enter this stark yet subtle world, where the absence of colour reveals the presence of everything else.
