A graduate of the Government College of Art, Calcutta, Sekhar Roy is a Calcutta born, bred and brought up artist, whose work is soaked in the city's milieu. His colorful paintings come immersed in varied human situations often juxtaposed against mythological imagery. A chaotic geometry of the decaying metropolis, pierced by harshly beating sunlight can be deciphered through a haze of smog-filled grime. His essentially duo tonic palette creates, alternately, moods of despair and hope. A socially motivated painter in the grand tradition of many Bengal painters of the past, he has evolved his own distinct style that is neither descriptive nor their narrative but is always pleasing. During the last three decades of his career, the artist's work has been exhibited in important group and prestigious shows in India and abroad including Calcutta, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Germany, Houston and Singapore amongst others.
