Shail Choyal born in 1945, Kota. He studied painting first at Udaipur University, and then from Jaipur before taking up a year’s study in printmaking at the Slade College in London on a British Council scholarship. On his return, he did his Doctoral thesis on ‘Nathdwara Painting’. A painter, printmaker and teacher, his large body of work adorns a distinctive miniature lineage. Appearing in a narrative idiom, it entails a juxtaposition of the allegorical with the real. Exploring the inherent aesthetic motifs in classical and folk art, his multi -tier division of space evokes nostalgia interlaced with a modern sensibility. Vibrant colors and surreal settings add a mystery to his compositions around the theme of Krishna.
