Born in1937,Calcutta. Ganesh Pyne grew up in the old city, and trained at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata. Coming in close contact with the Bengal School, he spent several evenings in smoky Kolkata cafes discussing communism and Picasso with his friends. He also worked as an animator for a while to earn a living before turning a full time painter. He also grew up on stories told by his grandmother --- fold stories, mythological stories, and fairy tales. In a fine blend of fantasy and romanticism he creates a lyrical surrealist imagery in fine lines, precise forms with minimal color. In a fine blend of the old and the new from the influence of miniature tradition to his exposure to cinema and Walt Disney cartoons, his uncanny work adorns a fresh look. He is known as the foremost exponents of the Bengal School of art.
